Fitness

Whether you’re hitting the gym, going for a run, or practicing yoga, knowing the right vocabulary can help you understandinstructions, communicate with others, and reach your fitness goals. This article provides a handy guide to essential workout terms in English.

General Fitness Terms


  • Workout


    Any physical activity done to improve fitness.

  • Exercise


    Physical activity performed to maintain or improve health and fitness. Often used interchangeably with “workout.”

  • Fitness


    The state of being physically fit and healthy.

  • Repetition (Rep)


    One complete movement of an exercise. For example, one push-up is one rep.

  • Set


    A group of repetitions of an exercise performed consecutively. For example, 3 sets of 10 push-ups means you do 10 push-ups, rest, do 10 pushyour heart rate and improve cardiovascular health, such as running, swimming, and cycling.

  • Strength Training (Resistance Training)


    Exercises that build muscle strength and endurance, often involving weights or resistance bands.

  • Endurance


    The ability to sustain physical or mental effort for a prolonged period.

  • Intensity


    The level of effort exerted during exercise. High intensity workouts are more challenging.

  • Rest


    Periods of inactivity during a workout to allow for recovery.

    An exercise performed by stepping forward with one leg and lowering the body until both knees are bent at a 90-degree angle.

  • Plank


    An exercise performed by holding the body in a straight line, supported by the forearms and toes.

  • Burpee

    An abdominal exercise performed by curling the torso up from a lying position.

  • Bicep Curl


    A strength training exercise that works the biceps muscles, typically using dumbbells or a barbell.

  • Deadlift


    A strength training exercise where a weight is lifted from the floor to a standing position.

Important Verbs


  • To work out


    To exercise. “I work out at the gym three times a week.”

  • To warm up


    To prepare the body for exercise.

  • To cool down


    To help the body recover after exercise.

  • To stretch


    To extend a muscle to its full length.

  • To tone


    To improve the shape and tightness of muscles.

  • To gain (muscle)


    To increase musclemass.

  • To lose (weight)


    To reduce body weight.
