Guidelines for Reporting Health Information on a Resume

Providing health information on a resume is generally not recommended. Hiring decisions should be based onskills, experience, and qualifications, not on health status. Disclosing health information could lead to discrimination or create unnecessary complications. However, there may be specific, limited circumstances where a brief, relevant mention is acceptable.

When to Avoid Disclosure

In most cases,avoid mentioning any health conditions or treatments on your resume. This includes:

  • Specific diagnoses like diabetes, cancer, or heart conditions.
  • Details about disabilities or chronic conditions.
  • Past or present treatments like surgeries, therapies, or medications.
  • Information about physical limitations, unless directly related to a job’s essential functions (and even then, be extremely cautious).

When a Brief Mention Might Be Acceptable

There may beextremely limited circumstances where disclosure might be acceptable, but only when the information is directly and demonstrably relevant to demonstrating the ability to perform a job’s essential functions. A physician’s note providing accommodation requests should never be included on a resume.

  • If an accommodation is needed for specific tasks, and a job description highlights the need for adaptation. Example: “Successfully managed complex projects requiring extended periods of focused work while managing a chronic condition.” (Avoid specifics!)
  • If the job requires extensive travel, anda pre-existing condition significantly impacts travel. Example: “Adaptable professional with extensive experience in complex environments, even managing prior travel limitations.” (Again, avoid specifics.)
  • If a job specifically requires a specific certification or qualification directly related to a condition. Example:”Certified Medical Assistant with five years’ experience providing support to patients with respiratory conditions.” (But still avoid specifics.)

Important Considerations

It’s crucial to remember that federal and state employment laws vary regarding the disclosure of health information.Laws protect applicants from discrimination based on health conditions. If you’re ever unsure about whether to disclose information, consult with an employment attorney or HR professional.

Always err on the side of caution and keep health-related information out of your resume unless it’s undeniably necessary and relevant tosuccessfully performing the job tasks.
