Conversation Starters
These prompts are designed to spark engaging conversations. Don’t be afraid to elaborate on your answers and ask follow-upquestions!
- What are you passionate about?
- What’s a new skill you’d like to learn?
- What’s a recent book, movie, or show you enjoyed?
- What are some of your favorite hobbies?
- Describe a memorable trip you’ve taken.
- If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
- What are some current events thatinterest you?
- What’s something you’re looking forward to?
Practice Exercises
These exercises will help you practice using the starters and expand your conversations.
Example 1: “What are you passionate about?”
Possible Response:
“I’m really passionate about environmental conservation. I volunteer at a local wildlife refuge and I’m learning more about sustainable practices. What about you?”

Prepare
a few responses to it, considering different scenarios and interests. -
Practice
with a friend, family member, orlanguage exchange partner. You can even use these starters in role-playing scenarios. -
Record yourself
speaking, then listen back to identify areas for improvement. Practice your pronunciation and fluency. -
