Which Health Conditions Prevent Delivery Riders from Passing the Mandatory Medical Examination?

Fitness

Delivery riders play a crucial role in the growing gig economy, ensuring that goods reach consumers quickly and efficiently. However, due to the physically demanding nature of their work—long hours on the road, exposure to weather, and the need for constant alertness—riders are typically required to pass a mandatory medical examination before being cleared for service. Certain health conditions can prevent individuals from meeting these medical standards, potentially disqualifying them from becoming delivery riders. Among the most common disqualifying conditions are cardiovascular diseases such as uncontrolled hypertension or a history of heart attacks, which raise concerns about endurance and risk of sudden incapacitation. Severe respiratory disorders like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) may also be red flags, as they can impair stamina and oxygen intake during prolonged physical activity. Neurological conditions including epilepsy or uncontrolled seizures pose safety risks both to the rider and others on the road. Similarly, significant musculoskeletal issues—such as severe back injuries or joint disorders—can limit mobility and the ability to safely operate a motorcycle or bicycle. Vision and hearing impairments that fall below the minimum legal requirements for driving may also result in failure of the medical exam, as clear sensory perception is vital for navigating traffic. Mental health conditions, particularly those involving episodes of psychosis or severe depression with impaired judgment, are evaluated carefully due to safety implications. Ultimately, the goal of the medical examination is not to exclude individuals unfairly, but to ensure that all riders are medically fit to perform their duties safely and sustainably.
