追溯身体力行,知行合一的源头:王阳明哲学体系中的实践智慧

Tracing the origins of embodied practice and the unity of knowledge and action leads us inevitably to the philosophical system of Wang Yangming, a 15th–16th century Chinese thinker whose insights continue to resonate in both Eastern and Western thought. At the heart of Wang Yangming’s philosophy lies the concept of “the unity of knowing and doing” (知行合一), a radical assertion that genuine knowledge cannot exist apart from action, and that moral understanding must manifest in conduct. Unlike earlier Confucian interpretations that treated knowledge and action as sequential stages, Wang argued they are intrinsically unified—like two sides of the same coin. For him, true wisdom emerges not through passive contemplation alone, but through active engagement with the world. This practical wisdom, or zhi xing, is cultivated through introspection, sincerity, and constant self-cultivation. Wang’s famous doctrine of “extending innate knowing” (致良知) emphasizes that every individual possesses an inner moral compass, which becomes clear only when one acts authentically and aligns intention with behavior. His life itself was a testament to this ideal: as a scholar, military strategist, and administrator, he consistently applied his philosophical convictions in real-world challenges. Today, Wang Yangming’s teachings offer a timeless model for integrating thought and action, reminding us that authentic understanding arises not in isolation, but through lived experience and ethical commitment.
