Food handler health assessments are essential to ensure public safety and prevent the spread of foodborne illnesses. These evaluations typically involve a series of diagnostic procedures designed to identify conditions that could compromise food safety, such as gastrointestinal infections, skin infections, or respiratory illnesses. Common diagnostic methods include medical history reviews, physical examinations, symptom-based screenings, and, when necessary, laboratory tests for pathogens like Salmonella, Hepatitis A, or norovirus. However, these assessments are strictly focused on communicable diseases that can be transmitted through food handling practices. Importantly, chronic conditions such as HIV/AIDS are not transmitted via food and therefore are not part of routine screening protocols. As a result, individuals living with AIDS are not excluded from food handling roles solely based on their HIV status, provided they are otherwise healthy and follow proper hygiene practices. Regulatory guidelines, including those from the FDA and WHO, emphasize that employment decisions should be based on an individual’s ability to safely perform duties, not on unfounded fears or stigmatization related to non-transmissible conditions.
