Grammar Point: Choosing Between 锻炼 and 锻练

Fitness

Both 锻炼 (duànliàn) and 锻练 (duànliàn) are Chinese words meaning “to train” or “to exercise.” However, they have slightly different nuances and usage.

锻炼 (duànliàn)

is the more common and generalterm. It’s used for training or exercising the body, mind, or skills in a wide variety of contexts.

Examples of 锻炼 (duànliàn):

(Wǒměitiān dōu duànliàn shēntǐ.) – I exercise my body every day.

(Wǒmen xūyào duànliànwǒmen de sīwéi nénglì.) – We need to train our thinking abilities.

(Tā tōngguò liànxí lái duànliàn tā de Yīngyǔ kǒuyǔ.) – He practices to train his English speaking skills.

锻练 (duànliàn)

is a less common term, often used in amore specific or technical context, particularly for training or strengthening something more tangible, or in the context of forging or refining metals.

Examples of 锻练 (duànliàn):

(Zài gōngchǎng lǐ, gōngrén shīfū men jīngcháng duànliàn jīqì.) – In the factory, the workers often train the machines. (This is unusual usage, but correct.)

(Zài gǔdài, gōngjiàng men xūyào duànliàn gāngtiě.) – In ancient times, craftsmen neededto temper the steel.

(Shìbing men xūyào bùduàn de duànliàn tāmen de jìnéng.) -Soldiers need to constantly train their skills.

In most everyday situations,

锻炼 (duànliàn)

is the appropriate choice.
